What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes swelling and pain that can range from mild to excruciating. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. The most common ones are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis which is the most common, afflicts about 40 million Americans especially people over the age of fifty.
The pain and the inflammation occur when the cartilage that protects the bones from rubbing against each other wears down.
The causes of arthritis can be difficult to pinpoint. Several factors may contribute to it. Some of the risk factors that can cause arthritis are listed below.
Symptoms of arthritis
- Pain and stiffness in joints, particularly, the knees and hips.
- Tender joints.
- Joints swell and become red, stiff and sore.
- Morning stiffness.
- Fatigue and flu-like aches and pains.
- Loss of appetite.
Causes of arthritis
Some causes of arthritis are, previous injury, food allergies, diet high in fats, poor posture, infection, emotional stress, genetics and poor digestion.
Others include excess weight which places extra stress on joints, occupational Hazards, hormone imbalance, and toxic metal accumulation.
Home remedies for arthritis pain relief
Mustard powder is a counter-irritant which increases circulation and movement of toxins from the joint space.
Combine mustard powder with 5-10 parts of corn starch and small amount of warm water to create a paste.
Smear the paste on a sheet of gauze and apply to the affected joint. Cover it with a hot pack for about 15 minutes.
Empty French’s mustard or any other similar mustard bottle into a bathtub filled with hot water. Mix well and soak yourself in the mustard bath for 15 minutes.
You may do this for a number of times to get a relief.
Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties enables it in relieving Rheumatoid arthritis pain. Recent study in Japan suggests that regular use of turmeric could be a potent strategy to prevent the onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis from developing to begin with.

Eucalyptus oil :
Add half teaspoon full of eucalyptus oil to one teaspoon of extra olive oil and massage the affected area with the mixture. Do it for a week and see how it works for your health.
Another alternative is to grate some ginger and squeeze the juice out with cheesecloth.Mix the juice with equal amount of sesame oil and apply it to the affected area.
You may reduce the burning sensation by adding more sesame oil to the ginger juice. These home remedies for arthritis have worked well for some people.
Bay leaves and olive oil:
Place 3 bay leaves and 4 teaspoons of pure olive oil in a saucepan and warm it. Do not let the oil burn or smoke. Let it cool and strain it with a coffee filter. Apply the oil to the affected joint.
Mahanarayan oil for immediate arthritis relief:
Mahanarayan oil is a blend of oil, usually sesame, and many herbs. The oil has warm properties that encourages blood flow to the skin and numb the nerve endings that transmit pain.
It also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Apply the oil to the affected joints.
The oil penetrates the skin and immediately softens the pain-causing deposits in the bone.
Boil two cups of unpeeled sliced potatoes in a non-aluminum saucepan with 5 cups of water. Boil until half of the water is left.
Let it cool down for about five minutes, then dip in a clean cloth, wring it out and apply it to the affected area.
Repeat the process as long as you want or until the pain subsides.
Horseradish for arthritis pain treatment:
Grate three table spoons of horseradish and mix it with half cup of boiled milk. Pour the mixture onto a doubled cheesecloth, or a loose-woven gauze-like cotton cloth, and apply it to the affected joints while it is still warm.
You may have some relief when the poultice cools down.
Yucca root is also known as Manioc or Cassava. Yucca contains saponins that are used as effective anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agents to reduce muscle spasms, which brings relief to arthritic pains.
If you are close to territories where yucca is grown, then you can apply this method. Mash some yucca roots and mix it with water. Apply it to the painful area.
You may repeat this process for days to get a result. If you don’t have access to yucca roots, you can use the yucca supplement.
Obtain yucca extract capsule from the health food store or online. It does have about 20 percent saponins, but it is effective.
A study showed that about 60 percent of patients who used yucca supplements had a great improvement.
Kosher salt home remedy for rheumatoid arthritis:
Heat about a half cup of kosher salt in a frying pan and prepare a poultice with it in a cheese cloth or something similar. Apply it to the affected area.
Repeat this home remedy quite often, to get some results.
Cinnamon stick and fresh ginger:
If your arthritis worsens in wintertime, or is associated with cold hands and feet, boil 20 g of cinnamon stick and 30 g of fresh ginger in 2 cups of water. Let the cinnamon and ginger boil until only half of the liquid is left. Strain it and drink ½ cup twice a day as tea.
Tabasco pepper sauce or cayenne pepper sauce:
Spread the hot sauce on the affected joints. Tabasco pepper sauce is made from a variety of pepper called Capsicum frutescens.
It contains alkaloid capsaicin, a spicy compound proven to numb pain when applied topically. Capsaicin enters the nerves, and briefly diminish them of the neurotransmitter that sends pain signals to the brain.
Apply a thin coat of toothpaste over the dried pepper sauce, if you feel a burning sensation. The glycerin in the toothpaste will minimize the burning discomfort.
Do not apply pepper sauce to an open wound.
Cayenne cream for natural arthritis relief:
Another alternative is Cayenne cream. Apply the cream to the affected area 2-4 times daily for relief.
Choose a cream standardized to between 0.025 and 0.075 percent of capsaicin. Capsaicin deplete the nerves of substance P, a neurotransmitter that transmits pain messages.
Guggul for long-term arthritis pain relief:
Guggul herb travels to the arthritic bone and removes the imbalances that are causing swelling, stiffness, and inflammation.
This herb can relieve arthritis within a day or two. Take ¼ teaspoon of guggul tincture with ½ teaspoon of water, 30 minutes before meal, three times a day.
Daily exercise, particularly aerobic aquatic exercise is beneficial. Strength building of muscles also helps in easing arthritis pains, particularly quadriceps work which helps in reducing knee pain.
Many physicians and experts have noted that emotional stress and failure to accept criticism seem to contribute to arthritis sufferers’ problems.
Stress itself causes many problems.
Arthritis itself can contribute to muscular, emotional stress and sometimes, depression. Take frequent time-outs, reduce caffeine intake, and exercise regularly.
