What are the causes of depression?
Depression cannot be traced to just one cause. It does vary from person to person and can be triggered by a combination of things.
Most of the time, depression is first triggered by an unwelcome or traumatic event, such as death of a loved one. It can also be caused by various other factors that are discussed below.
Prescription drugs that cause depression

Other common drugs that may cause depression include the following:

- Cimetidine for ulcers
- Bupropion for depression
- Diazepam for anxiety
An often overlooked factor is that hundreds of prescription drugs such as birth control pills, antihistamines, sedatives, and antibiotics, can cause depression or anxiety as side effects.
Over the counter drugs such as diet pills, and common remedies for indigestion, may also cause or worsen depression.
Habitual use of recreational drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, caffeine, and marijuana, may also lead to depression.
Diseases and illnesses
Many people who suffer from serious diseases often become depressed. Conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes weaken the mind and body. They may sap your energy, disrupt your sleep, and destroy your relationship.
Other diseases that may cause depression include:
- Infectious hepatitis
- Cerebrovascular disease
- Heart or lung disease
- Chronic pain
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
Allergies to foods
A victim of food allergies can manifest the same symptoms such as fatigue and sleeping problems typical of depression. One study found out that undigested grain particles can attach themselves to morphine receptors in the brain, suggesting a direct link between food allergies and mood.
Foods that often cause allergic reaction and depression include milk and dairy products, chocolate, shellfish, tomatoes, apples, soy, peanuts,wheat, and corn.
Chemicals, and metals
Research has also found out that chemical pollutants and heavy metal contaminants may cause depression and other sicknesses such as mental confusion, anxiety, hyperactivity, and gastric upset.
Chemicals that often cause depression are pesticide, paints, household cleaners, formaldehyde, and benzene.
The heavy metals that are likely to affect mood include lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum.
Nutritional deficiency is another important and often overlooked area that causes depression. You may experience depression if blood levels of the following nutrients drop below a critical point.
- Thiamine (B1)
- Niacin (B3)
- Folic acid
- Vitamin B12
- Pyridoxine (B6)
- Vitamin C
- vitamin D
- Vitamin E
There are so many other causes of depression. Somebody experiencing sleeping problems can be depressed.
Is also an important factor that contributes to mood swing. Low self-esteem can be a result of many reasons such as abuse, neglect, weight gain, rejection and loneliness.
Breakup in relationships, failing tests and examinations, loss of job, and social isolation can all contribute to depression.
Depression may vary in many ways. Therefore the treatment methods may also be numerous. However, the best alternative is to approach it with natural home remedies.
